From what I can gather, Nadine was adopted when she was a baby and raised by a family. She felt that they didn't love her as much as they had loved their original son. At the age of 5, the family was killed in an auto accident and she was sent to live with her adopted Aunt and Uncle.
At the age of 16, was when her hair had started to turn silver. Apparently this would also happen when she was in college when she'd go out on a date with a boy.
It was when she was in college, that Flagg managed to talk to her through a game of automatic writing. In Nadine's entire life, she was never able to make close friends with people. Up until the plague, she was a teacher in a private school.
