After this Mae went into depression and was manipulated by her parents into going into science and she graduated with a medical degree and specializing in microbiology from UCLA. Without caring about what path her life was on Mae joined the Army and was stationed at USAMRID in Virginia. The plague left Mae feeling very guilty that some of her research may have been responsible for the flu bug and has kept secret her medical degree and short career in the military for fear of being persecuted. She now poses as a teacher in the post-plague world. Sisko, her cat, came to her two weeks before the plague and has been the only other living thing that Mae trusts and loves since the death of an aunt Mae had developed a close relationship with.
