History: Was the son of a farmer, married the daughter of a neighboring farmer, father of two teenage sons. John is a hard working man who gets along with other people and is tolerant of their needs. He was active in the community and church, as well as a member of the school PTA along with his wife, Edith. He enjoys reading and regrets that he has little time to indulge himself in it.

His 13 year old son, Seth, was the first to get sick when the flu hit their community and died quickly. 17 year old Ben died next and Edith followed soon after.

John, distraught with grief, waited to be struck down and was angry and confused when he remained healthy as friends and neighbors kept dying despite all efforts to help. On one last visit to what was now a ghost town, he found a station wagon with out-of-state license plates and a sleeping three-year-old child curled up in the back seat. There was no sign of her parents. John took her home with him and waited another week for them both to get sick and die.

When they both remained healthy and the child clung to him but never spoke, he named her Erin after an aunt he had dearly loved, packed up his truck with dried meat, preserves and vegetables, turned the surviving stock loose, and headed out to seek other survivors.
