Character Type: Immortal
Apparent Age: 25
Actual Age: 402
Sex: Female
Height: 5'9''
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Brown
Nationality: African
Distinguishing characteristics: The only scarring she does have, is a small one that traces all the way
around her neck. She likes tattoos, but she doesn't have any.
Any other languages: Swahili, French, Spanish, Italian, and is currently teaching herself Japanese.
She's not that good at it, but she's learning through books and things of that nature. She'd like to
learn Russian.
Skills: Great cook, specializes in soul food, and a few French and Italian dishes. James knows
how to defend herself, but she's more the type to use her mind. She's a history buff, if that's any surprise. She
knows various African fighting styles, Zulu and Egyptian stick fighting, as well as Capoeira d'Angola. After
leaving Africa, and returning for a few years she had the time to learn it all for herself. Although James
can use her sword, she has trained with her takouba since she received it, she is a better fighter with her
staff.
Personality: After being put through years of slavery, and dying because of it. James's personality is how
one would expect it to be. She is a strong, intelligent black woman. She doesn't like being told what to
do, and when she knows she's right, she'll argue you down until you see it her way. This doesn't mean
she is irrational, or arrogant. She does know that other immortals have been around a lot longer than she,
she does know that there is more to this world then what she can see, and she respects this. Once you
get to know James, you'll see that she has a decent sense of humor, and that if she cares enough about
a person, human or otherwise, she'll grow to care for you. James is quick to protect and fight for
what she cares about, but she has never allowed herself to love anyone.
She loves a good joke, and is quite partial to dirty ones about sex, although she doesn't know many.
She can't stand jokes about race, though, which shouldn't come as a surprise. James would say that
she doesn't have a weakness, and even though she dislikes being tied, or bound in anyway for
History: During the year 1591, it is said that the Atlantic Slave Trade began.
Nyah was born at the beginning of the 1600's, the exact date and month are unknown. She'd like
to say that her birthday is on a major holiday, simply because it makes her feel a little more special.
Nyah was taken by the English when she was about 21, she was born in what is now considered
Rwanda, and she cannot speak her original language. Her Father, two older brothers, mother and
younger sister were shackled and taken aboard a boat to the 'New World' a few days after her village
was raided. In the underbelly of the ship, she watched each member of her family die, they sailed
across the Atlantic for what felt like years, and James, and one of her older brothers were finally
unloaded off of the ship, they looked like ghosts of their former selves.
They were sold to a wealthy plantation owner, as a set, in Louisiana. They learned little English, and
on the plantation James and her brother were separated. Because of her light complection, James
went to the house to assist the wife, Bonnie with chores, and her brother was sent out into the field to
landscape and pick crops. Bonnie was the one to give her the name, Elena.
They got used to this life after four years or so, James got to see her brother and soon they realized that
this was the life that was chosen for them. It was only until the plantation owner began flirting with her,
that things began to go sour. She resisted his advances, the plantation owner opted to hurt her brother
as punishment for saying no, until he forced himself on her one warm afternoon. Bonnie was outside
assisting another slave with the laundry. It didn't last long, but it was harsh enough to leave James scared
for her life, and willing to let him do whatever he wanted just so he wouldn't hurt her or her
brother as he had before.
Bonnie knew of this, but even a high class woman's status wasn't enough to oppose her husband and his
wrong doings.
After a year of the Owner's sneaking into James' quarters to rape her, her brother got fed up, and they
planned to escape. Their plan didn't work. The brother and sister were dragged back to the plantation.
In a farm house they were tortured in front of other slaves and used as an example of what would happen
if anyone else dared to try and leave this plantation. James's brother died first, and she soon after from
blood loss, and her body's low tolerance to such high levels of pain as a pre-immortal.
Before the slaves could bury her body, she resurrected, causing a ruckus in the outdoor slave's quarters.
Bonnie, fearing another slave escape came out before her husband could awake, and she found James
alive, but confused. She hushed the slaves, and told them to keep James hidden until she could figure out
exactly what to do. It was the slaves that gave her the name, Nyah That Cannot Die.
Whilst hiding, Bonnie began to teach James how to read and write. She promised her
a more formal education once she was able to move James out of the plantation. Since James was
technically a free woman.
A few months after James' death, the plantation owner died of some unknown fever. Bonnie took this as the
opportune moment to free James. After editing her papers, and declaring her free, Bonnie gave her half
of what she inherited from her husband, thus making James a very wealthy woman, which was odd, since
blacks didn't usually have large amounts of money. She kept it well invested, so the sum could grow
as she moved around the world, and through time.
James left Bonnie, and the plantation and went up north, where blacks lived better, she booked herself
passage on a boat to Europe, and traveled throughout Spain, England, Italy, and France as the world
around her grew a little more older. She heard of other Immortals, but hadn't really went in
search for any. This was the time when she finally learned what being an Immortal went. While
in her flat in France she experimented, cutting herself to various degrees to see how long it took her
to heal.
She burned herself with acids, and finally took the final step. She actually tried to kill herself. Instead of
stabbing herself in the heart, or hanging herself, she sliced her throat. When she woke up a day later,
and began cleaning up the mess of blood that she made, she figured there had to be some sort of catch,
that maybe there was a way Immortals could die, but she just didn't know. It was a few months after
that, that she saw her first Immortal fight, beheading and Quickening. She recorded this in her
journal, but she doesn't know the names of the Immortals, or if the winner is even alive now.
Unfortunately, the winner is still alive, a Englishman who died during the Bubonic Plague during the
1600's when James' life was just beginning. He tracked her down, which was somewhat easy, seeing as
James was younger than he, and tried to figure out what exactly were her purposes in France at the time.
Horrified that this man would take her head, as he had done to the Immortal before, the Englishman soothed
her, and explained why he had. Their reasoning was simple, an Immortal threatening another, and one of them
needed to die. This was just the way it was. The Englishman told her the ways of Immortals, thus proving
James's earlier theories on Life, and Death as an Immortal. He also explained The Game, Quickenings and
the Prize to her as well. James, of course, recorded this in her journal, including his name, which was
Whitman, at least, the name he gave her.
Whitman left soon after that, and James kept his face well memorized in her memory. She knew that there
would come a time when she might have to fight him later, although she hoped not. James isn't a violent
person by nature, and she dislikes war and fighting. However, peaceful she might be, she began training
harder, and working to become a better fighter after meeting Whitman.
She avoided the United States during the fifties and sixties, fearing Jim Crow laws would further
ruin her outlook on the future of blacks in the United States. Instead she went back to Africa,
and donated her time to helping AIDS victims, and abandoned children due to various wars.
She's earned a few degrees, the one she's most proud of is her Ph.D, in African-American History,
and her Masters in Communication and Writing, She got these degrees in Europe after her time
spent in Africa, creating false transcripts in order to get into college as Beatrix La'Rouque.
Around the 1980's, or so, James moved back to America, finally. She liked the look and feel
of Baltimore, Maryland so she decided to live there. She taught African-American History
at Howard University and earned a job as Curator of the Great Blacks In Wax Museum. She edited
her documents under the name of James Chopra, and that's now how she introduces herself.
She was working late in the office when Captain Tripps got really bad. A few of the other museum
curator's went home early, and none of the scheduled High Schools, and Middle Schools showed up
for their tours. She decided, that since she was the only person in the museum, to stay there. She could
hear everything going on outside. Car crashes, people dying and listened to the radio in order to stay
up to date with what went on. Eventually, everything stopped, radio transmissions, the noise outside.
She exited, and went to her apartment, gathering her journals, and photo albums, her clothes and her
swords and weapons. She decided that there had to be someone else out there, Immortal or otherwise.
Either way, she'd make her way out west. More space to rebuild what was left of her Immortal life. It
was on her way west, that James began having dreams of Mother Abigail, and it was strange because she
couldn't remember any of the dreams she'd had before that. Either way, she now had a purpose, and
she would stick to it.
