History:
Born in Columbus Georgia to Major General Jackson Sanderson
and Doctor Belinda `Billie' Sanderson. Derek or Dizzy as his friends
call him grew up in a very strict environment and was raised to be a
military man from day one. Jackson Sanderson was a kind man but did
not have an easy time showing his feelings and therfore for most of
his life Derek never really felt that his father approved of him or
loved him. His mother Belinda was often busy at the local hospital
but tried to lavish as much attention as she could on her only
child. More often than not however Derek found himself at Fort
Benning with his father and the troops stationed there.
From a very early age he participated in mock war games or capture
the flag with some of the men on base. They treated him well, many
of them considering him a younger brother of sorts. Derek took a
special liking of the boys in the jazz band and because of that
became an accomplished trumpet player - hence the nickname Dizzy
(after Dizzy Gillespie).
Derek joined the army straight out of High School and decided early
on he wanted to be part of the Rangers. In the Rangers he found the
closeness and camaraderie he had always been searching for from his
family. He didn't see any action through the 80s but come 1991 he
was sent to Saudi Arabia to fight in Desert Storm.
It was during the fighting that he first met a man from Delta Squad -
the elite of the elite in the army. His name was Sergeant John
Baker and Derek became enthralled by the man - his demeanor, the way
he carried himself - everything. Derek then knew that he wanted to
be a Delta - but that would take time and wouldn't happen during
this war. Baker liked what he saw in the young man and took him
under his wing, teaching him several skills. He also noticed his
knack for languages and took it upon himself to school Derek in
learning more dialects.
They met again two years later in Somalia when the United States
went after Somali Gen. Mohamed Farrah Aidid for crimes against
humanity. Intel was less than stellar throughout the operation and
several attempts to capture him failed because of it. The biggest
failure of the stay however came on October 3rd When a simple
operation spiraled into a dirty fight that saw the death of over
1000 Somalis and 18 American personnel.
Derek was part of one of the Ranger Chalks put in to cover the
building as the Delta teams swept through it and took the prisoners.
After one of the Delta team's Black Hawks went down the job switched
over to trying to get the men out of the downed Helo. Then a second
copter went down.
Derek went along with Baker and several other men to secure the
second crash sight. After they managed to do that they had to then
return to the first crash sight. Along the way Baker was shot and
killed. The other two men in the party were too far ahead to see
what happened and so Derek was the only witness to his death - and
also the only witness to his subsequent awakening. He was shocked to
say the least but said nothing as they caught up with the others and
then settled in.
It was during the long wait for an evac crew that Derek learned
about Immortals. Baker explained that he had been alive for several
centuries, explained what he was and what his life was like. It took
some time to sink in but gradually Derek came to accept this and
swore that he would tell no one of the other man's secret.
After the troops were pulled out of Somalia Derek finally was able
to join Delta Squad. It was during a stay at their base at Fort
Bragg North Carolina that he met a woman named Luann Smith. The two
got married after a year long courtship - Baker stood up as best
man.
During 1997-1998 he was part of a Delta Detachment that went to
Bosnia in effort to capture ranking officials guilty of crimes
against humanity such as mass murder, sniping civilians and
systematic destruction of towns and villages. It was during this
mission that Baker "died" and subsequently left the Army.
Back home things were not much better for Derek. His marriage was
failing. It would seem that the shadows of his childhood came back
to haunt him in his ability to form relationships with others the
way he did in the army. Derek never seemed totally comfortable with
his wife - nor any of her civilian friends. They divorced in 1999
after three years of marriage.
Life was pretty quiet for him until he was sent to Afghanistan in
2001 to help fight in what the president called "the War against
Terrorism" He had just returned home and was expecting a nice long
vacation when he was sent out to Fort Carson Colorado.
It seemed as though someone had escaped from a secret instillation
in the desert, someone carrying a deadly virus. By the time Derek
got to Fort Carson people around the country were getting sick and
the man had been found, dead, in Texas. He remained on in Colorado
to help keep security.
Eventually he was the only one left alive on base. He had a brief
phone call from Baker before the phones went dead. His friend was
alive but seemingly stuck overseas - where unfortunately the plague
was just as bad. He also spoke of strange dreams...
Derek didn't know what to think of that until roughly a week later
he too began to dream. He now is left wondering if he should answer
the call of the dreams or just stay put - away from people that
might hate him for what he is and most certainly away from people he
will have a hard time fitting in with.
